Adopting Pets in Illinois: Spay and Neuter Laws

Adopting an animal is a wonderful choice. You’re giving that pet a chance they wouldn’t otherwise have. Sometimes you’re even saving the life of this animal.

Before the paperwork is signed and the pet is in your possession though, you have work to do. You must ensure your pet has been spayed and neutered.

Here are the laws in Illinois about spaying and neutering your furry friends. We then recommend you bring your new adopted pet to a Carol Stream veterinarian for a checkup.spay and neuter laws from your veterinarian in carol stream

Spaying and Neutering Laws in Illinois

According to the Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs (ACC & D), “dogs and cats must be ‘rendered incapable of reproduction’ before adoption, or persons wishing to adopt ‘prior to the surgical procedures’ must enter into a sterilization agreement.”

What does this mean? As a future pet owner, you must sign a sterilization agreement if your cat or dog has yet to be spayed or neutered. You may then be able to proceed with the adoption.

Under Illinois law though, generally, it’s mandatory that your pets be spayed and neutered to the point where reproduction is not possible.
