Vaccines From Our Illinois Veterinarian

At Carol Stream Animal Hospital, our Illinois veterinarian and team is able to provide the services your pet needs to lead a healthier life. From routine exams and preventative care to diagnostics and even dental care, we do it all! One of the more common types of preventative care we provide here in our office is that of routine vaccinations for your pet.

Why Regular Vaccinations Matter

Most pets will need to have vaccines administered at least once a year, but specific vaccine schedules will vary based on the type of pet, breed, age, and risk factors. It is important that you keep your pet up-to-date on vaccinations for a number of reasons. For starters, by doing so, you can protect your pet's health and well being. Even if your pet spends most of its time indoors (as is the case for many domestic house cats), this does not mean that it's safe to skip any recommended vaccinations.

Furthermore, some vaccines can even help to protect you and other members of your family from diseases that can be transmitted from pets to humans. Rabies is a prime example of this. And of course, should you ever need to board your pet or take it to a groomer, any reputable business will require you to bring in paperwork proving that your pet is up-to-date on all required vaccinations. In many states, certain vaccines are even required by law (such as the rabies vaccine).

Important Vaccinations for Pets

If you're not sure which vaccinations your pet needs, no worries! Simply bring your pet in for an appointment and bring along any existing veterinary paperwork you have for your pet. This will help us to determine the proper vaccination schedule for your pet.

If you have a dog, there are a few vaccinations that your pet will likely need. Rabies is a key vaccination and one that is required by law in most states; this vaccine is needed once every year to three years, depending on the specific vaccination used. Distemper vaccines are also strongly recommended for dogs to protect against everything from hepatitis and parainfluenza to parvovirus and distemper. Some other vaccinations that may be recommended include:

  • bordetella (kennel cough)
  • Lyme disease
  • leptospirosis

If you have a cat, the rabies vaccine will also be important. Another essential feline vaccine is known as FVRCP, which protects against everything from feline distemper to calicivirus and panleukopenia. Additional vaccines that may be recommended for your cat include:

  • feline leukemia (especially for outdoor cats)
  • FIV and FIP
  • bordetella
